Something New & Something Bleu - Paparazzi Online Media sample Sacre Bleu Wine

July 13th, 2010

Something New & Something Bleu

“It’s at the port and ready for delivery. It’s en route to Texas via courier. It’s on its way. It will be there tomorrow.” These are just a few of the promises we got about our Sacre Bleu Wine samples. And while the frustrated people at Sacre Bleu had to report what they were told of the wine’s whereabouts to the lucky few who would enjoy a taste before being able to purchase the wine in Texas Central Market stores, we had bear the bad news that wine had never arrived.Delivery Man

But then something changed. A knock on the door. A freak-out by a Toy Yorkie called Louis. A man in a brown outfit standing at the door. A mid-sized cardboard box addressed to Blondi. And a signature on an electronic pad.

A transaction was complete. And low-and-behold, there is a Sacre Bleu. My guess is there’s a happy under-aged courier still sitting under an over-pass with multiple bottles of wine, enjoying his contraband of the original wine shipment. But nonetheless, we at Paparazzi got our wine, so life is good.

I suppose the story lies in the outcome of the tasting of the wine – so here it is. Red & Blondi called in the troops to get an unbiased opinion of the wine. Sacre Bleu is a Chilean wine with two distinct types – sauvignon blanc and cabernet sauvignon.

  • Sauvignon Blanc: You always start with the white in a wine tasting. In the white variety, I’m typically a chardonnay sipper. So my expectations were wide open. Red and I cheered to our first taste before guests arrived to make sure that what we were serving was of good quality, and to our pleasant surprise, the white wine glided down our throats with a crisp tartness that gave it the perfect intensity.
  • Cabernet Sauvignon: When drinking red, I always lean towards a good cab. I’ve shared fabulously exquisite bottles on special occasions and enjoy a pleasant table wine with a good flavor. Again, Red and I poured, toasted, swirled, smelled and sipped the cab before our guests arrived. Immediately I got a pleasant mix of fruitfulness and earthy flavors.

I don’t claim to be a wine connoisseur, nor am I a wine snob. So I’ll spare you the details of the subtle pine scent I smelled in the cab because, quite frankly, I’d be lying. But what I do know is when a wine tastes good or bad. After officially tasting both varietals of the Sacre Bleu wine, I feel more than comfortable recommending it to others. But I’m not the only believer. Here are reactions from some of the other tasters.

Sacre Bleu Sauvignon Blanc

Sacre Bleu Cabernet Sauvignon

Sauvignon Blanc

I’m typically a pino grigio kinda gal, but this sauvignon blanc made a believer out of me. -Heather

The description of this wine is spot on. The high acidity is great. Perfect for the summer heat – Red

Cabernet Sauvignon

Very smooth. I get a mix of spices that is very nice. – Carey

When can I get this? I want to bring it to my next book club. Not too expensive but very good! -Dawn

I love red wine – particularly cab. This one has a good mix of fruit and spices that goes down very smoothly. -Jenn

So there you have it. Confirmed good stuff. You can buy it for yourself in Central Market stores in Texas at the end of July. Date to be released soon, so stay tuned. Cheers!

And our winner is...

And our winner is…

When we asked consumers and fans to tell us about their love affair with Cabernet Sauvignon, we knew we were going to read some great stories.  And we did.  Choosing a winner was not as simple as we first imagined.  There were too many really good ones.  So we brought in some outside judges from Paparazzi Media Online who read the entries with us.

What ultimately struck us as best in show came from Michelle Gamradt, a Dallas based social media oenophile who’s opening line read “My love for wine has been like my love for men..” Beyond her torrid affair with Cabernet Sauvignon is a woman who enjoys watching movies with her husband, playing with her new puppy, fantasy football and cooking delicious meals for her friends and family.  While her husband and puppy might believe they have first dibs on her heart, her confession to us clearly has shed new light on things.

“My love for wine has been like my love for men, ever changing and maturing. First I would always go for the sweets ones (super fruity, white Zinfandels and dare I say Franzian in nature). And that was nice, but we all know how those sweet ones just end up getting left behind as our wine palates change. So my obvious next move was to those crisp white wines that were refreshing, perfect for spring happy hours and my go-to chicken recipe. This phase was like a old relationship- we were comfortable and knew what to expect . I knew I could always enjoy a nice Chardonnay or Pinot Grigio. If things got a little boring I could throw a sparkling white wine in the mix.

Whenever someone brought up the subject of a bold Cabernet, excuses of headaches, stained teeth and my lack of knowledge prevented me from trying them. Until that one fateful night, when things with the old-ball-and-chain (Pinot Grigio) had gotten dull, and I decided to spice up my life and head to darker side. My first sip of the cab was strong, rich and full-bodied. It was so good, but I questioned myself…I don’t normally do this…This isn’t my type…Do I even know anything about red wine? But the fruit and tannins blended together so well that I continued my affair with the cab. From then on I only swayed back to a sparkling white for occasions, knowing that my true love was always there, ready to be enjoyed with a steak dinner and sinful chocolate.

Cabernet, you stole my heart, and I am completely okay with that. Amen”.

We’re rushing a $100 House of Blues gift certificate to you.  Thanks to everyone, again.  Your poetic affections for the grape, like any good deed, will neither go unpunished or unrewarded.  Keep sipping. The best is yet to come.

12 winning red wines for under $10

02:54 PM CDT on Tuesday, June 23, 2009

By TINA DANZE / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News
food@dallasnews.com

Chalk it up to the economy – or just good sense: This month the wine panel indulged a penchant for budget wines.

We've flirted with them in prior tastings, marveling at how some bargain bottles hold their own with pricier picks. But until now, we'd never focused exclusively on the under-$10 category. Some panelists begged for a little wiggle room – an extra buck or two yields many more remarkable values – but we held firm to the rock-bottom price tier.

After all, these aren't wines you bring to a birthday dinner. They're reliable, everyday wines. We sought good wines for the money, but not necessarily the truest expression of the varietal. And we gave the nod to some well-made, easy-drinking wines, even if they weren't particularly complex.

We sampled 23 reds sold by at least one retailer for less than $10. We were pleased to find a dozen good wines. Because promotions come and go, we excluded wines sale-priced for less than $10. That said, not all stores carry the wines we've listed for the same price, so expect some retailers to creep over or fall below our stated price.

Next month, we take on whites.

THE MISSION: Find good red wines costing less than $10 for everyday drinking.

THE TASTERS:

•Blythe Beck, executive chef, Central 214

•George Howald, Serendipity Wine Imports

•Paul Pinnell, sommelier; owner and general manager of Dalí Wine Bar and Cellar

•James Tidwell, certified wine educator; master sommelier, Café on the Green, Four Seasons Resort and Club in Las Colinas

•Cathy Barber, food and wine editor

•Tina Danze, freelance writer

THE WINES
2008 Darby & Joan cabernet Sauvignon, Australia

Although not a classic cab, this rich, jammy wine is typical of Australia. It bursts with ripe, dark berry flavors spiced with juniper and licorice. "It's tons of fruit barreling down," said Paul Pinnell. $9.99; Sigel's; WineStyles in Flower Mound and Watauga; Put a Cork in It; Shellman's Fine Wine and Spirits.

PANEL PICK: 2006 Red Diamond Cabernet Sauvignon, Washington State

This wine showed the most true cabernet character and proved a great value for a cab. Berry and cherry flavors are laced with green olive, cocoa and vanilla notes. "It's a good everyday wine for cab drinkers," said James Tidwell. $8.98-$9.99; widely available.

2007 Cortijo III Rioja, Spain

This easy-drinking tempranillo-garnacha blend reveals more personality than most budget wines. It shows intense red-berry flavors, with classic tempranillo spiciness and silky tannins. "It doesn't taste like a mass-produced wine," said Paul Pinnell. $8.95; Central Market; Sigel's; select Goody Goody and Centennial Stores.

Ravenswood Vintners Blend Zinfandel, California

Not necessarily the best value in zinfandels, but a well-made, reliable wine nonetheless. It bursts with blueberry and raspberry fruit, peppered with spice and bramble. Paul Pinnell called this "a slam-dunk for a wine under $10." $9.99; widely available.

Cristalino Brut Rose Cava, Spain

This affordable, fruity sparkler could even be a party wine. Clean and refreshing, it delivers strawberry, raspberry and bright cherry flavors with a hint of sweetness and loads of lively bubbles. Relatively low in alcohol, Blythe Beck called it "perfect for sipping by the pool." $7.99 at World Market; Big Daddy's on Northwest Highway; Whole Foods Market; select Goody Goody and Centennial stores; Pogo's; and Addison Wine and Spirits.

2005 Parina Sparkling Shiraz, Australia

This fruity, medium-bodied sparkler rates as fun and interesting. Rich and ripe, it holds dark berry, plum and black cherry flavors with a hint of sweetness. A novelty wine that will wow many – but not all. "It's kind of over the top," said Paul Pinnell. $9.99; Goody Goody; World Market; Big Daddy's on Northwest Highway; Whole Foods Market; select Centennial stores; Put a Cork in It; Brian's Wines and More; Mr. G's.

2005

Blackstone Merlot, California

This smooth wine shows nice complexity for a merlot of this price. "The supple, black-plum fruit has an implicit sweetness that rounds out the wine," said James Tidwell. Although somewhat generic in its flavor profile, it's a well-made wine for the money. $8.99; widely available.

2006 Solaz Tempranillo- Cabernet Sauvignon, Spain

This tempranillo blend is impressive for the money. The 20 percent cabernet component lends a structure and body uncommon at this price. Juicy, with sweet oak notes of cinnamon and vanilla, it's a pleasing, well-made wine. $7.99; most Kroger, Albertsons and Tom Thumb supermarkets; Big Daddy's on Northwest Highway; select Centennial stores.

2007 Torres Sangre de Toro, Spain

Made of garnacha and cariñena, this crowd-pleaser shows an elegance that belies its price. Rich, dark berry and currant flavors are woven with hints of licorice and spice. "Year after year, it gets consistently good reviews," said George Howald. $9.99; widely available.

2007 Penfolds "Koonunga Hill" Shiraz-Cabernet, Australia

This tasty blend was a close contender for the Panel Pick. "It's a well-made wine, with supple, ripe fruit and excellent structure," said Tidwell. "The bright, expressive fruit flavors jump out of the glass," said Pinnell. $9.99; widely available.

2008 Lindemans Bin 99 Pinot Noir, Australia

Clean and elegant, this wine boasts juicy cherry and berry fruit with super-soft tannins and well-integrated oak. "It's a solid, versatile food wine," said Howald. At this price, you'd be hard-pressed to find a decent domestic pinot. $7.49; widely available.

2007 Cellar No. 8 Cabernet Sauvignon, California

This easy-drinking wine leans far to the soft side for a cabernet. Still, it's a pleasant wine for drinking on its own. It shows dark cherry and currant flavors with notes of vanilla and nutmeg. Think of it as a red table wine and you'll appreciate it more. $8.99; widely available

What about the Kroger 3 for 9.99? or the Wal-Mart 2.99 per bottle? I find the Kroger 3 for 9.99 is not that bad at all. As a matter of fact I pick up 10 per week! save big time & it's pretty good. The Wal-mart brand is not as bold as the Kroger brand. I'm a big wino so this deal is the shiz-net! *considering the tastes of course..

I'm picky about reds and my favourite is Rosemount Estates Diamond Label Shiraz - $7.29 at Costco and generally $11-13 elsewhere. Fantastic value for a thick, spicy wine that pairs well with red meats (roasted, grilled, or barbequed) and stands alone beautifully for after- (or before-!) dinner sipping. Disclaimer: I do not work for Rosemount and I am not a certified wine taster - I just really really like finding great bargains in red wine. :)

If you need a wine under $10/bottle for a crowd, Barefoot Chardonay & Cab are good choices. Both are very drinkable & we served both at our wedding. I tasted the Lindemans and I didn't think it was very good at all. This is coming from someone who isn't that picky with wine.
